Bandon Run June 2014

This year our run took place on Sunday 15 June 2014.

 Drivers’ briefing by Bob Clarke

We gathered at Bandon Motors where we were greeted by our hosts Bob and Catherine Clarke. Tea, Coffee and scones were served before we set off in glorious sunshine on what was to be a wonderful day of motoring in one of the most beautiful parts of this island.

We followed the West Cork Scenic Route to Kilbrittain and Harbour View, through Timoleague, famous for the ancient Abbey and on to the lovely coastal village of Courtmacsherry, which was filled with people enjoying the lovely weather.

We parked up for a short time and allowed our Ts to be admired then it was off again climbing up the hill through Barryroe and Butlerstown. All the while we were almost constantly overlooking the sea sparkling in the sunshine and the views were truly breathtaking as we drove along.

We arrived in Clonakilty via Ring and drove to the Quality Hotel for our lunch stop. Refreshed after a delicious meal we were off again. We passed the Cloheen Holiday Village on our way to Ardfield where we stopped for a group photo and then resumed our journey along the coast through Dunmore back towards Clonakilty for a further stop at the Model Railway Village on the outskirts of the town.

This is a fascinating place to spend some time wandering through the model replicas of familiar local towns including Bandon, Kinsale and of course Clonakilty itself. There is also a large amount of memorabilia on view from the halcyon days of the West Cork Railway which ceased to operate in the 1960’s.

We cranked up again and headed back the road for our annual visit to Ballinascarthy homeland of the Ford family and the stainless steel replica of the famous car so dear to all our hearts… the Model T!

After the all important group photos were taken, we drove the last few miles back to Bandon Motors at the end of our trip. Refreshments were to hand on arrival just in case anyone was hungry and facing a long journey home.

As always, a huge ‘Thank You’ to the Clarke family for yet another great day.

We had over 12 cars and no problems. The weather, as always, was spectacular. Bob knows something we don’t and it does not rain on his parade for the Bandon run!!!

We look forward to next year already!
