The Pub with no Beer Just sharing a few photographs taken outside The Rathcoole Inn, “Irelands oldest two storey thatched pub”, with the owner Kevn Hoyne and myself sharing a cup of tea in these extraordinary times. Thinking back to the first day we met members of the Model T Club, I was chatting to Michael & Joan Rigney and that was the day I decided I wanted to own a Model T. In the previous years I owned a Model A but I was envious of all the beautiful Models T’s.  With encouragement from Peter Duffy I started looking and purchased IC...

In 1956, when I was 10 years old, my father, John Connor, purchased an old car from a gentleman who lived near Geesala, Co.Mayo.   My brother Patrick and I, were brought along, on what was then just an adventure for me, along with two mechanics who worked for my father – he clearly was a bit sceptical about his new purchase!! For good measure, one of the mechanics drove the towing ambulance. We arrived at the house and drove up the steep driveway , which had a shed on the left as we approached. The shed doors were opened to reveal a...

My Introduction to the world of the Model T      The Ford Model T has taken its place in history like no other car we know, there are many reasons why the Model T is a special car and of course we all know why.   My first experience of the Model T was back in 1988 when I was first appointed a Ford Dealer in West Cork. A friend of mine kindly offered to place his Model T in our new ford showroom for display purposes. I was only delighted to take up the opportunity as I knew this would create a lot of interest with vintage car lovers out...

Mick Melia’s Ford Model T Ton Truck As a child I listened to my father’s childhood stories about Mick Melia’s Ford Truck. Mick was a neighbour who had returned from America, having spent over thirty years there. On his return in 1926 he bought a Ford Model T Ton Truck, and a haulier’s licence. This was an amazing piece of equipment at the time and a huge step forward from the horse and cart. By all accounts Mick was a colourful character. He came to the attention of the Gardaí on a number of occasions, including driving while under the...

Hello Members   My first introduction to Model Ts was when we traveled to England to bring home our 1913 Tourer.  Twelve months later 2013 I was asked if I would like to go for a weekend away. Sure I thought all my birthdays had come together. I was going to Cork on my very first Model T run. Great!!! The car will probably break down , I won’t know anyone, no-one will talk to me. These were my thoughts on the way down. We arrived in Rosscarbery on a lovely sunny day but I wasn’t prepared for the sight of so many cars parked...

Greetings to all fellow members. I have always had an interest in wheeled mechanical things from an early age.  From a family tie I can only attribute this to my maternal grandfather who as a dispensary doctor in Milford, Co Donegal bought in 1903 a brand new baby Peugeot, which is under the care of a first cousin of mine.  At the tender age of 17, having completed my leaving certificate, I was brought by the scruff of my collar into what is now PWC to serve a five year apprenticeship as an articled clerk earning the vast sum of £1 per week. ...

Hi members I hope all is well with you in these strange times we are all living through.  Our  secretary mentioned in his recent email our club is looking for things to publish on the website.    As I have plenty of unplanned time on my hands I have put together a small video (approx 11 minutes) of the construction of the cutaway engine which may be of interest to some people.   Our Club are welcome to publish it on the website and share it with whoever you please.  Click this link to view John’s video on https://youtu.be/A_HkGRpy_lo  ...

Hello members. I have put together a few memories of my life with old cars. My first vintage car was an Austin 12 which I bought in the 70s from a lady in Rostrevor,Co Down, my first restoration job. I joined Vintage Austin Register and a few local clubs.  At that time we were young and fit enough to do our work and head off either to join or take part in the vintage outings, mostly fairly local.   My late brother in law had a Rover and we had lots of good times together. From there I have had quite a few restoration jobs, selling one to buy...

PRESIDENT’s GREETINGS

MEMBERS Our country is in the midst of a health crisis due to a dreadful Coronavirus.  Many of our members are cocooning at home and keeping a safe distance from others so that we may protect ourselves and our fellow citizens. For now there is little chance that any events will take place in year 2020.  We have cancelled our 31st Annual Rally that was to take place in Kilkenny at the end of June and for that matter everything else is off.  Thankfully, our honorary secretary has kept the flag flying so to speak and the bi annual newsletter The...

Autumn Run 15th September 2019

The Autumn Run of the Club took place on Sunday 15th September when we all gathered at the Maldron Hotel Portlaoise.  We were delighted to welcome Vincent and Aileen and two small boys to our club. We look forward to seeing them out and about when they get going in their newly acquired Touring Car. The customary teas and coffees were enjoyed within the plaza complex at the Maldron.  We were pleased to see that Applegreen Fuel Company opened a depot alongside the facilities, which is where many of us fueled up.       Outside meanwhile, members...
