Adare in April 2015

Adare in April 2015

The first run of the season is always something to look forward to after the long Winter months of hibernation!! So, on Sunday April 19, 2015 our members gathered for the 10th annual run in Adare, hosted as usual by David and Marian Cuddy. We had around eleven cars, all in tip top condition ready to go.

We began with our tradition of tea, coffee and scones while exchanging news and gossip, generally catching up on the happenings of the previous few months with one another, before heading on the run.

It was the most beautiful day. The sun beamed down as we drove through the country roads. Spring was all around us. Birds nests could be spied in the trees. Daffodils, tulips and primroses filled the gardens with colour and the trees themselves were putting on their pale green coats of budding leaves in readiness for the season of new life to come.

We discovered our destination was to be Foynes and the Flying Boat Museum.

It was a most fascinating visit. The museum was formally opened in 1989 by none other than Maureen O’Hara Blair. The story of Foynes in the establishment of passenger flights across the Atlantic is vividly captured in the museum which is located in the original terminal building. The museum also contains a unique and informative collection of memorabilia of the early days of aviation and the people involved in the extraordinary development that eventually brought us to where be are today in terms of air travel.

Another fascinating fact we learned was that it was here, in Foynes, the Irish Coffee was invented in 1943 by a man called Joe Sheridan. Needless to mention, the aforementioned tipple is still available to enjoy should you care to pay a visit !!!

We returned to our cars and resumed our run through delightful meandering roads
and villages including Kilfinney and Rathkeale to our lunch stop at the recently opened Riverside Restaurant in Croom.
